It's not surprising that with more sea than land, Maldives holidays are the perfect outlet for water-sports and fishing.
As well as deep-sea and game fishing trips, many resorts and beaches also offer an extensive array of water sports programmes for visitors to enjoy. And if you don't try any you really are missing out as these waters quite simply must be explored!
Surfing is popular in the North and South Male Atolls, with many fantastic hotel resorts offering lessons and equipment for surfing. Some resorts will surf on the local beaches and others will organise boat trips to other popular surf spots. Surfing during the monsoon season can be more dangerous with waves reaching up to 10ft high. Island resorts such as the Anantara Veli offers a surf-school for guests wanting to learn to ride the waves.
Snorkelling is another popular water activity in the Maldives and attracts all ages and swimming abilities. The crystal clear Indian Ocean water allows you to see the sea floor, beautiful coral and exotic fish as they roam the calm waters. Most resorts in the Maldives have shallow snorkelling reefs, perfect for families and young children. Some resorts also offer excursions to deeper water where you can snorkel among larger fish such as Manta Rays, Dogtooth Tuna and Butterfly fish.
For the more adventurous and less fearful tourists, the Maldivian waters are also perfect for waterskiing and jet skiing. Many resorts, including the five star Baros Resort, have their own speed boats and skis for hire. The Baros Resort even has a beachfront water sports centre that offers a range of activities.
The list of extensive water sports available in the Maldives goes on and on, making it clear how popular the Maldivian waters are. This year the Six Senses Laamu Resort in the Laamu Atoll will host the first Six Senses Watermen, a gathering of water sport's icons from around the world.
The event, running from 30th September – 30th October, will bring legendary surfers and famous divers to the resort and will offer workshops and water-sport clinics to guests as well as several fundraising events for international charities.
