With a population of 580,000 people, the city of Düsseldorf in the western region of Germany is a fun and bustling city that attracts people from all around the globe. Days in Dusseldorf start mid-morning when shops open around 9 or 10AM. For such a large city, it is sometimes surprising that popular shops close as early as 6PM, though large locations are often open until 8PM. Sundays are extremely lazy in Dusseldorf, so it is best to plan your shopping excursions during the workweek or on Saturdays. The city of Düsseldorf also has a tourist centre located in Old Town. The Old Town tourists centre is closed on Sundays, but is open the rest of the week from 9.30 in the morning until 7 at night.
Dusseldorf has a long list of things to do and sights to see. The popular German city is also home to "the longest bar in the world". It is located in Altstadt where there are nearly 300 places, such as bars and restaurants, to grab a quick bite or a leisurely night out on the town. During the day, particularly on Saturday, you will find couples hand in hand along with giggling friends strolling down the fronts of cafes and bars looking for the perfect getaway. Located in the centre of Old Town is the busy Burgplatz Square. The beauty of old town houses dominate the atmosphere making Old Town an interesting mix of old architecture with contemporary culture. Old Town is also a great place to go if you are looking for some local cultural activities. The Hetjens Museum is located here as is the K21 Museum. There is also the Film Museum where you can learn about and see samples of German films over the past century. It is particularly interesting to those intrigued by World War 2 as the people of Germany have gone to great lengths to present the truth about the World War 2 propaganda that swarmed their country in the 1930's and 40's.
Dusseldorf is also well known throughout Germany and much of Europe as a top-notch shopping destination. Shoes are an extremely popular attraction here and as such there are a number of fairs and shows that take place throughout the year centered around them. Dusseldorf is also a great place to find fashion discounts at high-end second hand stores. This is a particularly popular area amongst local students that like to hang out at the most happening bars whilst looking for the best deals in German fashion. This part of Dusseldorf is also where you will find some of Europe's most desired fashion design boutiques and shows.
If you are not entirely sure where to head first or even what direction to venture in, then make sure to choose one of the many Dusseldorf hotels that offer complimentary or pay as you go taxi service. Many hotels these days have their own travel kiosk located within the hotel where you can book tickets or arrange travel plans as well as set a daily itinerary. Dusseldorf is not an overwhelmingly large city, but the streets can be confusing if your new to the layout of Germany. One thing that might help keep you and your travel mates oriented in the right direction is the River Rhine. In Dusseldorf, you are never to far from the water's edge and it is quite possible to walk nearly the length of the city along the bank of the Rhine. So, whether you are looking for an amazing cultural experiences or a daily party atmosphere, Dusseldorf has so much to offer that it is one of Germany's top rated tourist locations.
