Delhi's UNESCO World Heritage Tour

Delhi can be reached through the international airport in the western part of the city. The brand new international airport was built to accommodate the crowds of athletes and supporters for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Taxis and buses are widely used to travel around the city, and visit the many highlights. A Delhi hotel is usually comfortable and convenient, which is important for sightseeing the city.

There are so many attractions within the city of Delhi…far too many to experience in the space of a few days. That is why it is probably best to see a selection of sites through tours. Below is a list of the UNESCO World Heritage sites that can be viewed via a tour.

Red Fort Tour

The famous Red Fort was the palace of the renowned emperor, Shah Jahan (the same guy who built the Taj Mahal). Since being built in 1648, the fort has been pillaged quite badly, with many of the interior rooms and buildings being stripped of most things. Nevertheless, the complex is surely a tour in itself, and visitors will need at least half a day to fully appreciate the Red Fort for what its worth. There are so magnificent structures within the Red Fort itself, including:
•    Dawan-i-Am: the public viewing area that still contains a beautiful marble flooring that used to hold the throne.
•    Diwan-i-Khas: a room made completely out of marble.
•    Khas Mahal: this was the main area of residence for the emperor, and also contains the Mussaman Burj.
•    Mumtaz Mahal: today, this place is a museum that displays textiles and weapons of the Sultan and guards.

Humayun's Tomb

Located in the southern reaches of Delhi, Humayun's Tomb is open from sunrise to sunset, and it is believed that these times are definitely the best to visit too. There are some spectacular gardens that encompass the attraction, and many say they are the most beautiful in Delhi. However, the gardens are only part of the spectacle. There are several other landmarks within the complex that make it one of the most exciting places to visit in all of India.
•    Tomb of Humayun: the most renowned structure in the complex is the actual tomb of Humayun. Humayun was the second Mughal emperor and built his tomb with the design of the Taj Mahal in mind. This is why the tomb looks similar in structure to the Taj Mahal.
•    Tomb of Iza Khan: an octagonal tomb that houses the remains of Iza Khan, a noble of the emperors court. This structure is about 20 years older than Humayun's tomb.
•    Babur's Tomb: made of red and grey sandstone, this beautiful tomb found at the south gate is believed to be Humayun's father's. It is also quite a stunning architectural marvel.

Qutub Complex

This complex is filled with amazing structures that are known world wide. It is reachable via the Yellow Line of the Delhi Metro, and boasts many interesting sites. Qutub Minar was once the tallest structure in the world upon being built, and Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, which is now just ruins, was the most important mosque in South Asia. Other places of note within the Qutub Complex include the Iron Pillar, Ala-i-Minar, Ala-i-Darwaza and the Tomb of Imam Zamin.
