Albufeira is a magnificent tourist destination found on the fabulous coast of Southern Portugal. The region is known as the Algarve, and is famous for its tourist destinations. However, Albufeira would have to be one of the best, if not the best, location to holiday in the area. The are plenty of Albufeira-Algarve hotels on offer.
Found to the west of Algarve's largest town, Faro, the city of Albufeira has grown substantially since its humble beginnings as a small fishing village. Today, it is blessed with amazing beaches, beautiful hotels, stunning cultural structures, and a holiday atmosphere unmatched on the Iberian peninsular.
Over recent years, transportation between the Algarve and the rest of Portugal has become much better. Nowadays, tourists can fly directly to Faro Airport, which is only situated a short distance to the east of Albufeira, from several major cities, including Madrid and Lisbon. In addition to this, the train services and bus network between the capital of Portugal and the Algarve take about four or five hours per journey.
Fisherman's Beach: one of the most famous beaches in the region of Algarve, and in particular in the city of Albufeira, is Fisherman's Beach. Although this beach gets quite busy during peak tourist times, visiting this destination is a must, especially for the food. It isn't hard to guess what the main menu here is…you got it! Seafood! There are plenty of fresh seafood restaurants along the beachfront, allowing visitors to literally finish their meals, and head straight into the water.
Albufeira Beach: similar to Fisherman's Beach, which it lays next to, Albufeira Beach is the other main beach of the city. Yes…seafood is also available in this area, but with the larger number of pubs and bars, more variety is available too. Several steak restaurants, and even some restaurants offering different European cuisine can be found.
Old Town: further back up the hill, the Old Town district is fantastic for dining out. After visitors have finished exploring the many attractions in the area, it is possible to find a fine selection of restaurants for dining. Seafood is once again on many menus. However, there is an even greater choice of cuisines here, including Indian, German, French, Italian, vegetarian and Islamic-influenced restaurants.
The Strip: although the area known as ‘The Strip' is more famous for its 24 hour nightclub scene, there are a variety of bars and restaurants offering delectable menus. ‘The Strip' is found on Avenida Dr Francisco Sa Carneiro, just a few kilometres from Old Town, and a few hundred metres from the beach front.
Gypsy Market: shopping wise, there are a number of markets found in the city of Albufeira. However, one of the most exciting is the Gypsy Market, which only operates a few times a month. There are so many different items and goods for sale, including crafts, souvenirs, foodstuff and fresh produce, and it is a great place to practice Portuguese.
Rua do 5 de Outubro: this is the area of Albufeira that many tourists flock to for shopping. It is certainly the main shopping district in Albufeira, and boasts an assortment of goods to look out for, including ceramics, souvenirs, fashion, touristy type goods like sunglasses and beads, and of course, accessories.
Algarve Shopping Mall: this is one of the newest members of the Algarve shopping elite, and is found just outside Albufeira City. It is similar to most large shopping malls, offering restaurants, cinemas, entertainment areas, fashion stores, jewelry, accessories, music, computer goods and much more. It is one of the most visited complexes in the Algarve, especially when the tourist season is on hand.
Other: the city contains many minimarkets and supermarkets that provide customers with fresh produce, clothing, and many other items for sale. Also, just walking the streets of Albufeira will open tourists eyes to a host of various goods and services, including local bakeries, tailors, ceramic shops, retail stores, jewelry stores, and tourist-related goods, like t-shirts and sunnies.
