Summer Events and Pastimes

In temperate countries, summer is the warmest of the four seasons and falls between spring and autumn. During the summer solstice, the days are long and the nights are short, with day length decreasing as the season progresses. The onset of summer varies according to climate, culture, and tradition. However, when it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere, it is winter in the Southern Hemisphere and vice versa.

Summer is traditionally associated with sunny days and hot, dry weather. Trees, flowers, and vegetation are normally in bloom during this time, and many animals are busy taking care of their newborns. In many western countries, children do not go to school during the summer months, although vacation dates vary. In North America, many children and teenagers spend several weeks in a summer camp where they get to enjoy constructive leisure activities with their peers. In the Northern Hemisphere, summer holidays begin as early as mid-May. However, school ends on mid- to late-July in England, Wales, and Mexico.

Traditionally, people in temperate climates have taken advantage of the warm temperatures by spending more time outdoors doing physical activities. Common activities include going for picnics in grassy areas, swimming at the beach, and playing sports. Commonly played sports include cricket, volleyball, skateboarding, baseball, softball, and various water sports.

The summer weather also gives many artists a creative boost. Many great artists such as the French Impressionists have painted some of their best works during the summer months. Summer events denver such as musical concerts, plays, and dance recitals are also held outdoors in the summer months. Some famous summer festivals include the Stratford Summer Music Festival in Ontario, Canada and the Eurockéennes de Belfort in Belfort, France.

There are also summer events denver that focus on spirituality. The ancient festivals of the summer solstice or Midsummer are celebrated in some European and Scandinavian countries, typically between the 21st and 24th of June. It is associated in Christian countries with the birth of John the Baptist despite its pagan origins. Midsummer events are notable for their bonfires that are believed to drive away bad spirits and renew nature's reproductive powers.

In Southern European countries such as Portugal, Mid-summer events denver are fused with the celebration of popular saints' feast days. Notable feast days include St. Anthony's Day (which falls on June 13th in Lisbon) and St. John's Day (which falls on June 24th in Almada).
