Key West Beaches

Once you get to Key West and throughout the Florida Keys you may be amazed that there are a limited amount of beaches.Reasons being these coral islands were at one time coral reefs millions of years ago when the oceans were a great deal deeper.

Coupled with no wave action due to barrier islands as well as coral reefs and with no sand to begin with, sandy beaches are a little scarce. With that being said, there are some great opportunities  for getting in some beach time and fantastic inshore SNORKELING !

Listed below are a few suggestions:

South Beach

Appropriately named South Beach is because it's the southernmost beach within the
U.S.and is adjacent to the Southermost Hotel .This is often one of the most happening beaches in Ket West and is a favorite with all the locals and since it is located at
the southern end of Duval street can be attractive to tourists as well.

Many consider this the  sandiest beach in Key West tucked between  Key West all inclusive resorts and also a concrete wharf. You'll be able to rent just about anything for water sports including snorkels and fins to test-out the colorful tropical fish round the wharf pilings and small patch reefs.

Smathers Beach

Within the south shore of Key West is Smathers Beach, Key Wests largest Beach at  2  miles long.Distributors, concessions ,beach sport rentals are lined-up  the length of S.Roosevlt Blvd,so you'll always have loads of food and drinks .Snorkelers have zones just offshore for some covienient snorkeling.

Fort Taylor Beach

This beach is located at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park and is said by many to be the top beach within Key West. The major reasons are its an outstanding area to snorkel as well as witness the magnificent sea life that inhabits Key West.

The beach is adjacent to  deep shipping channels and the water is the freshest of all the Key West beaches. This really is the place to snorkel and witness the massive Devil Rays as well as  Large Barracuda's,Tarpon and the other  aquatic life of Key West.

There are picnic tables, shade trees to get out of the sun,and a cafe in the former ranger quarters. There is a small entry charge ,but when you consider that this is a multi attraction place that has a historic fort complete with moat, its definately great value for the
money.
