Seeing the Local Sights Whilst On Self-Catering Country Holidays in Aberdeenshire

Situated a little to the north of the town of Huntly in Aberdeenshire, the Bin Forest consists of a mixed conifer woodland which hosts a number of popular walks.  Trees in the forest were initially planted by the Duke of Gordon way back in the 1840s.

One of the Bin's most visited attractions is the award-winning Huntly Peregrine Wildwatch Centre, which is kept open during the summer months only. 

Huntly itself has a population of around 4,500 and used to be known, for reasons best known to the locals, as Milton of Strathbogie.  Despite its small size it has its own castle and is also the home of the world famous Deans bakers, producers of the renowned shortbread biscuits.  Historically the home of the Gordon highlanders, Huntly also offers salmon and trout fishing on the Bogie and Deveron rivers, as well as golf, mountain biking, rugby, walking and Nordic skiing.

A little further north still is the civil parish of Turriff, known by many for having its own football team who were quite recently promoted to the Highland League, and Scotland's largest two-day agricultural show is also held in the town.

Turriff was the scene of the first engagements of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms (1639–51).  Much more recently, in 2010, a statue of the "Turra Coo" (Turriff Cow) was placed in the town centre in memory of a local farmer who refused to pay National Insurance when it was first introduced by Lloyd George early in the early twentieth century and whose cow was then seized in part payment and sold on as a consequence.

Lanzarote or Lanza-grotty?

For people who like to travel around Europe, the term Lanza-grotty might be familiar.  If you speak to people who use it freely they have basically come away from Lanzarote having had a bad experience, usually with a particular resort or accommodation.  Of course, in principle, its easy to have a bad holiday experience wherever you go, but poor old Lanzarote was unfortunately labeled - 'Lanza-grotty' - by a few bad experiences and the name stuck.

Personally, I have never had a really bad experience in Lanzarote.  On one occasion the apartment we stayed in wasn't particularly great, but I certainly wouldn't label the island because of it.

It's perhaps easy to see, when you get off the plane and hop into your hire car or shuttle transport, why people think that Lanzarote doesn't offer much.  The first thing you see as you travel down the LZ-2 is dry, baron land.  Having said that, if you are lucky enough to arrive to a perfect blue sky, the orange landscape does sit quite nicely against the blue backdrop!

I can't help feeling that people who have their bad experiences generally pay a little less for their holidays.  I am not saying that is a bad thing by any means, as I often look around for the best deals to save a few pounds.  But as the saying goes, you generally get what you pay for, and again I find it a little unfair that the island gets a bad reputation for the sake of us keeping a few notes in our pockets.

I would also like to point out that my bad experience was in Puerto del Carmen, about 10 years ago.  Now, Puerto del Carmen, or PDC as the locals like to call it, is sometimes known as Blackpool in the sun, and its easy to see why.  The sea front is lined up with English Cafes and Bars and it does little for the image of the island.  Again, I am not saying that there is anything wrong with this as the resort obviously does very, very well in attracting visitors year on year but I wonder if people who have had these experiences might have had them in PDC rather than Playa Blanca or Costa Teguise?

Having said all that, we are all entitled to our own opinions, and the fact that we are all so different is what helps to make the world go around.  Just because I find something satisfactory doesn't mean someone else will and so its very easy for a place to get a bad reputation.

The unfortunate title of Lanzagrotty, in my view, is totally unjustified.  I love the island, the year round climate, the great food and compelling culture and am happy to put my bad experience down to, well a single bad experience!  Lanzarote has so much more to offer than the odd complex in need of repair and I urge anyone who has once had a bad experience to go back, hop in a hire car and explore the, quite frankly, stunning island.

Visiting San Miguel de Salinas on Holiday in Spain

When on your HOLIDAYS IN SPAIN, San Miguel de Salinas (Spanish for "St Michael") is a great place to visit. It is a small Spanish town which is situated between Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada. The town is the highest point in the Comarca of Vega Baja del Segura and descends from the mountain with streams and gullies. The streams lead to El Lano which is where you will see the salt lakes (De Salinas). A visit to this little town will not be regretted: the views of the salt lakes are beautiful and you will notice the lakes change colour with the density of the salt. In San Miguel, you will find some lovely little quaint tapas restaurants which are very popular with the locals in the late afternoons: this is a great way to experience the real Spain.

While you are staying in the region of the Costa Blanca you may wonder how the region became as it is. The settlement began in roman times at somewhere called Nisdomia, however the only real piece of history is the church at La Zahurda which was built in 800. It is said that the first building there was a Hermitage which later changed into a convent and a monastery. In 1600, the church which was originally dedicated to San Miguel was constructed and then re-built later on. Around the church the town began to grow: there was mostly farmland there and the main work was agriculture of dry crops, cereals and pulses but the main crop was salt. Unfortunately the town was badly damaged from the earthquake which hit in 1829.

While you are in San Miguel why not explore the local shops which are there? English is spoken everywhere so there shouldn't be any language problems. The place to visit there for a refreshing pit stop is the "Nut House": the tapas are great here and every drink you buy has a plate of nuts and crisps to go with it hence the name. The owners are very welcoming and whether you are a local or a tourist they will welcome you like an old friend time after time.

It's position in the foothills of the mountain range delivers spectacular views over the Gulf of Aqaba to Jordan and Saudi Arabia merely 6 miles away. The location in addition to the fact it doesn't get congested makes Taba Heights perhaps the most stunning places in Egypt.

With over three miles of natural beaches there are various quiet places that offer excellent snorkelling opportunities. Dive boats operate from the international harbour every day and there are a number of shops and restaurants in the area beside the El Wekala known as the Uptown. Weekly in Uptown, there is a street festival where guests and residents come together for a night of entertainment. For all those residing in hotels along the beach front, free buses run ferrying people round the resort.

Several hotels are dotted around the golf course making this an outstanding desert setting. The 5* hotels sit alongside the beach and further up the hills at the highest point of Taba Heights is the 4* El Wekala Golf Resort. It is an all-inclusive hotel that also has its own section of beach featuring a bar and pool. There's also a Dine Around Privilege allowing guests to sample the cusine at various dining places in different hotels in Taba Heights.

The resort is the perfect base to explore the surrounding area as well as visits to Eilat and Jerusalem in Israel or the outstanding Petra in Jordan. For those not wanting to travel too far, St Catherines Monastery is a popular excursion that is put together with a visit to the laid back resort of Dahab.

For anyone seeking to explore the coral reefs, there are choices for scuba divers and snorkellers as well. Farun Island (or Pharoahs Island) is a popular location for boats with both snorkellers and scuba divers. There is an ancient fort on the island constructed by the Saracen Salahdin during the time of the Crusades. The excursions all depart from the harbour and for divers, there are lots of great sites well suited for all abilities of diver giving a stunning variety of marinelife. For now, Taba Heights is still a rather unknown jewel in the Sinai yet with so much to offer you holidaymakers it's becoming a lot more popular.
