Palazzi Vaticani in Rome

Already in the mid-ninth century, the area around the ancient Basilica of St. Peter was acitadel fortified by walls constructed by Leo IV (847-855), the so-called "lion city". Between the end of the thirteenth century and the early decades of the fourteenth century had been built a few buildings around the square courtyard of the parrot said: they will form the nucleus of the Vatican Palace. After the exile of Avignon (1309-1377), it was not until the end of the fifteenth century to see the construction of new buildings, such as the Palaces of Sixtus IV (1471-1484), including the Sistine Chapel, which takes its name from this pope, and those of Innocent VIII (1484-1492), located 300 meters north of the Vatican Basilica. It is thanks to Julius II (1503-1513) and his architect, Donato Bramante, the idea of ??linking the two parts of the palaces built by his predecessors with two longitudinal bodies that contained a grand courtyard divided into three levels. The popes of the sixteenth and seventeenth century continued and enlarged the Vatican palaces. In particular, Sixtus V (1585-1590) must also be the building where the Pope resides at present and from which every Sunday at noon faces (second on the third floor window on the right) to bless the crowd that gathers in the great square .

The Vatican Film Library was established November 16, 1959 by Blessed John XXIII, with the aim of collecting and preserving film about the life of the Church. The material in the film, which requires particular climatic conditions, is kept in a special cellarer with a constant temperature of about 16 degrees and humidity at 30%. Among the films in the archive will indicate, among other things "LeoneXIII", built in 1896 on film Lumière, "Pius XI and Marconi," Vatican Radio on the launch of 1931, "Pastor Angelicus", the biography of Pius XII " The Second Vatican Council. " It also reports "The Inferno", a film of 1911 on 'Dante's work, produced by Helios Film of Velletri, in which for the first time the special effects are used in a modern key. 'S last film, is part of the "Fund Joye", a collection dating back to the beginnings of cinema films, given by the Jesuits at the Vatican Film Library. Historians believed that film "Hell" had been lost and it was found in the archives of the Film Library has generated considerable interest from which came a major cultural initiative. Thanks to the contribution of the pharmaceutical company Bayer and Cinecittà Holding, the film has been restored and was made into a DVD for schools.
