Vatican Radio was commissioned by Pope Pius XI after the Conciliation with Italy in order to connect their systems via the center of the Catholic Church with the various parts of the world. The first transmitting station, designed by Guglielmo Marconi in the Vatican City, was inaugurated the same Pius XI February 12, 1931, with a radio message addressed to the whole world. To meet the growing needs, Pius XII decided to build a new center for broadcast Santa Maria di Galeria, 25 km from Rome. The new center, which enjoys the immunities provided under Articles. 15 and 16 of the Lateran (the specific agreement between the Holy See and the Italian Republic and the 'October 8, 1951), was inaugurated by Pius XII October 27, 1957.
Inside the Vatican Gardens, at the house of Leo XIII which houses the Directorate of Vatican Radio, have been built two satellite dishes for satellite transmissions of radio and telephone communications, they can cover virtually the entire world, greatly reducing the use of antennas and transmission of traditional systems. Currently, the Vatican Radio, whose production offices and transmission of programs are located in Rome at the Palazzo Pio (Piazza Pia), has five terrestrial networks, telematics and satellite broadcasts in 39 languages ??for about 438 hours per week, towards the five continents. From 1 January 1986, Vatican Radio has become an organization independent of the state and is configured as an institution connected with the Holy See, located in a special relationship with the Secretariat of State. A daily newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano called, reports the speeches of the Holy Father, the activity reports of the Holy See, on the main events of the Church, Italy and the world, and many important contributions of scholars in various disciplines.
