All About Maricopa, AZ

Maricopa is an up and coming city in the state of Arizona. Located in the Gila River Valley, Maricopa became incorporated in 2003 and is now among the top twenty largest cities in the state of Arizona. In fact, Maricopa has a population of more than 43,000 people according to the 2010 census. Maricopa has the second highest population in Pinal County and is included in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Maricopa was first inhabited by Native American traders in the 1600s. In the 1800s, Maricopa became a home to settlers from other nations when the railroad expanded into the area. Initially, Maricopa was primarily an agricultural community. Though new businesses have emerged in the city, it is still home to a strong farming community. Maricopa seeks to hold on to the positives of its past while moving smoothly into the future by seeking careful economic growth.

The city of Maricopa is made up of approximately 46% Caucasians, 3% African American, and 7% Native American. The remaining Maricopa residents are of other races or of two or more races. Almost half of the households in this city have children less than 18 years of age living at home. Slightly more than half of all Maricopa households include married couples, and the remaining households are non-families or single parents. The average size of a household in Maricopa is 3.56. The median household income in Maricopa is slightly over $30,000, while the median family income is closer to $32,000. 19.1% of families in the city are considered to be in poverty.

As far as public transportation, Maricopa is home to the only Amtrak station in the state of Arizona. There is also the MaricopaXPRESS, which is a regional station associated with the Phoenix Metro-Plex. The metro runs Monday through Friday. Finally, Maricopa offers a bus service known as the City of Maricopa Express Transit, or COMET, with multiple stops throughout the area on two different routes.
