Badrinath – Sacred Dham of India

Badrinath is a Hindu holy town and a nagar panchayat in Chamoli district in the state of Uttarakhand, India. Badrinath is the most important of the four sites in India's Char Dham pilgrimage. Badrinath is in the Garhwal hills, on the banks of the Alaknanda River, at an elevation of 3133 m.

The nearest airport is the Jolly Grant Airport near Dehradun, about 317 km from Badrinath. The nearest railway stations to Badrinath are at Rishikesh and Kotdwar, which are at a distance of 297 km and 327 km respectively. There are regular buses operating to Badrinath from Delhi, Haridwar and Rishikesh.

Guarded on either side by the two mountains Nar and Narayan, the Neelkanth Peak provides a splendid backdrop to Badrinath, one of the ‘Four Dhams'. One of the most celebrated pilgrim spots in the country, it plays host to the famous Badrinath Temple. Legend has it that Lord Vishnu came to the area, called ‘Badri Van', or the berry garden, to meditate after Narad rebuked the Lord for being immersed in worldly pleasures. The main deity is a meditating Lord Vishnu.
Facing the temple at the bank of Alaknanda River is a hot water spring known as "Tapt Kund", a bath in which is very refreshing to all travellers. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple of Shri Badrinathji, is 5 m high, built in the form of a cone with a small cupola of a gilt bull and spire. The temple opens every year in the month of April-May and closes for winters in the third week of November. Even though legend dates the temple back to the Vedic age, Guru Adi Shankaracharya has established the present temple. The temple has three parts - Garbha Grih (The Sanctum Sanctorum), Darshan Mandap (for pujas) and Sabha Mandap (for devotees to assemble).

Badrinath was re-established as a major pilgrimage site by Adi Shankara in the ninth century. In recent years its popularity has increased significantly, with an estimated 600,000 pilgrims visiting during the 2006 season, compared to 90,676 in 1961. The temple in Badrinath is also a sacred pilgrimage site for Vaishnavites.

Badrinath has been mentioned as a holy place in scriptures and legends for thousands of years. According to the Bhagavata Purana, "There in Badrikashram the supreme being (Vishnu), in his incarnation as the sages Nara and Narayana, had been undergoing great penance since time immemorial for the welfare of all living entities." (Bhagavata Purana 3.4.22)

Badri refers to a berry that was said to grow abundantly in the area, and nath means "Lord of". Badri is also the Sanskrit name for the Indian Jujube tree, which has an edible berry. Some scriptural references refer to Jujube trees being abundant in Badrinath.

The Garhwal Himalayas has some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Snow capped peaks, misty mountains, green valleys, gushing rivers, the stately devataru (deodar) forests, grassy slopes, abundant flowers and an amazing array of birds and butterflies all of which combine to make this place one of the most charming spots on this planet. It is also one of the holiest places on earth. The spiritual vibrations here cannot fail to be felt by anyone however insensitive. It is no wonder that this place is known as devabhumi - the valley of the gods.

The four main dhams or holy shrines in the Himalayas are Badrinath, the abode of Lord Narayana, Kedarnath, the abode of Lord Shiva, Gangotri, the source of the river Ganga and Yamunotri, the source of the river, Yamuna. Of these Badrinath is considered to be the most sacred. In the Bhagavad Purana, Lord Krishna tells his friend and devotee, Uddhava that in future he would be available only in the holy spot of Badrikashrama (Badrinath). He gave Uddhava his sandals and told him to carry them to Badrinath and keep it there for people to worship. These are to be seen even now. The Hindu scriptures say that the life of a Hindu would be incomplete without making a visit to Badrinath. It is the supreme place of pilgrimage especially for the Vaishnavites (worshippers of Vishnu and his avataras). According to the Padma Purana, the rishis found Uttrakhand (modern Uttranchal) to be indeed a glorious temple built by Nature for the worship of the Supreme.

From time immemorial the whole of India has been linked with these holy spots by a bond of consecrated faith.

Badrinath has a very ancient history. It dates from the Vedic period. It is a common belief that many of the Vedic hymns and the major portions of the Upanishads were sung first in this spot known as Badarikashrama. It is a place where countless sages and seers have done penance. No other spiritual place in India is called "ashrama" - a sanctuary for spiritual seekers. The whole land between Nandaprayag and Satopant is known as the Badri Vishal Kshetra. The great sages, Nara and Narayana are said to be practicing tapasya here even to this day. The Mahabharata mentions that these sages took a human birth as Krishna and Arjuna for the benefit of mankind. The Mahabharata also mentions that Krishna visited Arjuna in Badarikashrama and lived with him for a considerable period of time during their exile. The sage Vyasa also visited this spot. In fact the cave dedicated to him is close to the temple and this is where he is supposed to have written the Mahabharata with Ganesha as his scribe. It is in this cave that he collected the Vedas and divided them into four parts which he taught to four of his chief disciples. Many sages like Vasishta and Kanwa went there to meditate.

Five out of the six schools of Indian philosophy wrote their treatises in this holy land. It is no wonder therefore that every Hindu considers a visit to Badrinath as a means of liberation from this life of transmigration.

Kedarnath – The Sacred Temple of Himalaya

Amidst the dramatic mountainscapes of the majestic Kedarnath range stands one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Kedar or Lord Shiva. Lying at an altitude of 3584 m on the head of river Mandakini, the shrine of Kedarnath is amongst the holiest pilgrimages for the Hindus. There are more than 200 shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva in the district itself, the most important one is Kedarnath.

According to legend, the Pandavas after having won over the Kauravas in the Kurukshetra war, felt guilty of having killed their own brothers and sought the blessings of Lord Shiva for redemption. He eluded them repeatedly and while fleeing took refuge at Kedarnath in the form of a bull. On being followed he dived into the ground, leaving his hump on the surface. The remaining portions of Lord Shiva appeared at four other places and are worshipped there as his manifestations. The arms appeared at Tungnath, the face at Rudranath, the belly at Madhmaheshwar and his locks (hair) with head at Kalpeshwar. Kedarnath and the four above mentioned shrines are treated as Panch Kedar.

An imposing sight, standing in the middle of a wide plateau surrounded by lofty snow covered peaks. The present temple, built in 8th century A.D. by Adi Shankaracharya, stands adjacent to the site of an earlier temple built by the Pandavas. The inner walls of the assembly hall are decorated with figures of various deities and scenes from mythology. Outside the temple door, a large statue of the Nandi Bull stands as guard. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the exquisitely architectured Kedarnath temple is considered to be more than 1000 years old. Built of extremely large, heavy and evenly cut gray slabs of stones, it evokes wonder as to how these heavy slabs had been handled in the earlier days. The temple has a "Garbha Griha" for worship and a Mandap, apt for assemblies of pilgrims and visitors. A conical rock formation inside the temple is worshipped as Lord Shiva in his Sadashiva form.

Kedarnath is the seat of Lord Shiva. It is one of the twelve "Jyotirlingas" of Lord Shiva. Lying at an altitude of 3584 m at the head of river Mandakini, the shrine of Kedarnath Temple is amongst the holiest pilgrimage for the Hindus. It is no wonder that Adi Guru Shankaracharya - a great scholar & saint, chose to enshrine Lord Shiva in this land, where the unholy becomes oly and the holy becomes holier. Kedar meaning powerful is another name of Lord Shiva the protector and the destroyer.

Situated in the backdrop of the majestic Sri Kedarnath range, Kedarnath Temple is a 14 km trek from Gaurikund.

At Kedarnath there are several Kunds (pools, tanks) that are known for their religious significans - shivkund, Retkund, hanskund, Udakkund, Rudhirkund are the most important. A little away from Kedarnath is a temple dedicated to Bhaironathji who is ceremoniously worshipped at the opening & closing of Kedarnath. The belief is that Bhairavnathji protects this land from evil during the time when temple of Kedarnath is closed. There are more than 200 shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva in Chamoli district itself, the most important one is Sri Kedarnath.

During the winters, the shrine is submerged in snow & hence is closed. Fortunate are those who have good weather, but twice blessed are those who are at Kedarnath on a moonlit night- the snow peak gleams like hundred silver pinnacles atop the glittering mountains.

The holiest of Shiva's shrines is linked to Gold among base metals so that every pilgrims finds peace here, and it is said that devotees who die here become one with Shiva himself. Beyond the temple is the highway to heaven, called Mahapanth.

Somnath Temple – Sacred Place in Gujrat

Shree Somnath is first among the twelve Aadi Jyotirlings of India. It has a strategic location on the western coast of India.

Ancient Indian traditions maintain a close relationship of Somnath with release of Chandra (Moon God) from the curse of his father-in-law Daksha Prajapati. Moon was married to Twenty-Seven daughters of Daksha. However, he favoured Rohini and neglected other queens. The aggrieved Daksha cursed Moon and the Moon lost power of light. With the advice of Prajapita Brahma, Moon arrived at the Prabhas Teerth and worshipped Bhagvan Shiva. Pleased with the great penance and devotion of Moon, Bhagvan Shiva blessed him and relieved him from the curse of darkness. Pauranic traditions maintain that Moon had built a golden temple, followed by a silver temple by Ravana, Bhagvan Shree Krishna is believed to have built Somnath temple with Sandalwood.

The research based on ancient Indian classical texts show that first Somnath Jyotirling Pran-Pratistha was done on the auspicious third day of brighter half of Shravan month during the tenth Treta yug of Vaivswat Manvantar. Swami Shri Gajananand Saraswatiji, Chairman of Shrimad Aadhya Jagadguru Shankaracharya Vedic Shodh Sansthan, Varanasi suggested that the said first temple was built 7,99,25,105 years ago as derived from the traditions of Prabhas Khand of Skand Puran. Thus, this temple is a perennial source of inspiration for millions of Hindus since time immemorial.

The later sources of history account for several desecrations by Muslims invaders during eleventh to eighteen century A.D. The temple was rebuilt every time with the reconstructive spirit of the people. The modern temple was reconstructed with the resolve of Sardar Patel who visited the ruins of Somnath temple on November 13 1947. Then President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, did the Pran-Pratistha at the existing temple on 11 May 1951.

Other spots in the temple are Shri Kapardi Vinayak and Shri Hanuman Temple in addition to Vallabhghat. Vallabhghat is a beautiful sunset point. The temple is illuminated every evening. Similarly, the Sound & Light Show "Jay Somnath" is also displayed every night during 8.00 to 9.00, which allows the pilgrims an ethereal experience in the backdrop of grand Somnath temple and the holy wave sounds of the Ocean. Ahalyabai temple is also close by, which was built by the queen mother Shri Ahalyabai Holker during 1782. This temple maintained the Pooja Parampara of Bhagvan Shiva during the hostile political conditions.

Bhalka Teerth:

This sacred teerth is located 5 km on Prabhas Veraval highway. The arrow of the poacher named Jara at this spot hit Bhagvan Shree Krishna. Bhagvan Shree Krishna was resting in meditation pose under a pippal tree when the poacher misread the foot of Bhagvan Shree Krishna as a deer and hit from a distance. Bhagvan generously pardoned the poacher and blessed him. This divined leela of Bhagvan Shree Krishna is immortalised by a beautiful temple and an ancient pippal tree. Bhagvan Shree Krishna then walked a small distance and arrived at the holy banks of river Hiran from where he took his last journey to his Neejdham. The spot is under development with the assistance of the Central Government of India.

Sanchi Stupa – A Sacred Place for Buddhist

Emperor Asoka (273-236 B.C.) built stupas in Buddha's honour at many places in India. Stupas at Sanchi are the most magnificent structures of ancient India. UNESCO has included them as one of the heritage sites of the world. Stupas are large hemispherical domes, containing a central chamber, in which the relics of the Buddha were placed. Sanchi stupas trace the development of the Buddhist architecture and sculpture at the same location beginning from the 3rd century B.C. to the 12th century A.D.

Asoka when he was a governor married Devi, the daughter of a respected citizen of Vidisha, a town 10 km from the Sanchi hill. Prince Mahendra visited Sanchi with his mother before leaving for the island of Lanka for taking Buddhism there. Emperor Asoka had put up at Sanchi a pillar edict and a stupa containing relics of the Buddha. Addition of new stupas and expressions in stone of legends around the life of the Buddha and the monastic activities at the Sanchi hill continued under several dynasties for over fifteen hundred years. Also, the Brahmi script could be deciphered from the similarities in inscriptions carved at different places in the main stupa.

Sanchi stupas are noteworthy for their gateways as they contain ornamented depiction of incidents from the life of the Buddha and his previous incarnations as Bodhisattvas described in Jataka tales. Sculptors belonging to different times tried to depict the same story by repeating figures. The Buddha has been shown symbolically in the form of tree or through other inanimate figures. One of the sects of Buddhism opposed depiction of the Buddha by a human figure.

The top of the Asoka pillar, which comprises of four lions, has been kept in the museum maintained by the Department of Archaeology. The size and the weight of the pillar point to advanced construction technology that was existent at the time of Asoka. It must have been an incredible feat of engineering to bring the stone for carving the pillar from the mine to Sanchi and installing it up the hill.

Jataka Tales:

Jataka tales as do Aesop's fables teach generosity and self-abnegation based on previous lives of the Buddha as Bodhisattvas. As a Bodhisattva he took births as man, animal or bird. It is believed that the Buddha accumulated virtue by good deeds he did as Bodhisattvas and had attained merit for achieving nirvana in his last birth when he was born as the prince Siddhartha.

Six-tusked Elephant Jataka

The Great Monkey Jataka

The Vessantra Jataka

The Sama Jataka

Six-tusked Elephant Jataka:

In one of his previous births the Bodhisattva was born as a six-tusked elephant. He lived in the Himalayas with his two female elephant wives named Chulasubhudha and Mahasubhudha . Chulsubhudha despised her husband as she thought that he loved his other wife more than her. She prayed that in her next life she may be born a beautiful girl and have the good fortune of marrying the king of Varanasi. Her deep jealousy and the desire to take revenge from her husband resulted in her death. As she had wished, she was born in her next birth a beautiful girl and became the wife of the king of Varanasi. She feinted illness and pleaded her husband to ask Sonuttar, the king's archer, to bring for her the tusks of the six-tusked elephant. The hunter wounded the six-tusked elephant with arrows and tried to pull out his tusks. The elephant took pity on the hunter and helped him in pulling out his tusks. When the tusks were given to the queen she repented her wanton act and died out of grief.

Kakinada the Second Madras of India

Kakinada is a centre for business people and is the Head Quarters of East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. Long time back, Kakinada was considered as "Second Madras". The original name of this place was Kakanandivada named by the king of Ikshavaku, Kaka. During 17th century, some parts of the city was occupied by the Dutch and named this place as Co-Canada. The name was then changed to Kakinada after the independence during 1947.

Kakinada was under the rule of the Nandi Kings, followed by the British. After the European settlers came into this region, the city developed substantially. The Dutch were one of the first settlers in the region followed by the British. Several signs of colonial times are seen around the city even today. Kakinada is often referred to as the "Fertilizer City" because there are numerous fertilizer plants in this place. It is also known as the "Pensioner's Paradise" because the city is very well planned, and at the same time very peaceful. It is now ranked as the fifth largest city in Andhra Pradesh and the fourth largest city in coastal Andhra because of its dense population.

Kakinada has a rich culture which directly reflects in the numerous temples, mosques and churches located in and around the city, along with the many festivals celebrated here. Pongal, Ganesh Chaturthi, Ugadi, Dashera, Diwali, Christmas and Ramzan are some of the most popular festivals celebrated in this region.

Kakinada has a tropical savanna climate. The weather is hot and humid for most of the year. The hottest part of the year is late May to early June. The coolest part of the year is January and the northeast monsoon prevails from mid-October to mid-December. Cyclones in the Bay of Bengal frequently hit the city.

The cuisines include the traditional Andhra food with Aavakaaya pickle which is made from mangoes. Kakinada is also famous for its delicious Pesarattu, a breakfast or brunch item formed into crêpes from moong daal (pesara pappu), green chillies, ginger and cumin. This city is also famous for its unique Kakinada Kaaja, a sweet made from maida and dipped in sugar syrup. Pootarekulu is a sweet in coastal Andhra, made of thin sugar plates.

Rajahmundry and Guntur – Two Major Cities of Andhra Pradesh

Rajahmundry, originally known as Rajamahendri, is better known as the ‘cultural capital and born city' of Andhra Pradesh. This might be due to the fact that this palce was the origin for Telugu language. Poet Nannayya who is the first poet of Telugu was born here and hence gave Telugu a script which made it a language.

History:

-It is believed that the Chalukyas were the earliest rulers of the place.

-11th Century: Rajaraja Narendra was a Chalukya king who ruled the city. However, fresh archaeological data suggests that the history of the place is older than that.

-In the 19th century: It was one of the biggest South Indian cities and was the epicenter of many uprisings during the British Era.

-Nyapathi Subbarao and Kandukuri Veerasalingam were the two most important freedom fighters from Rajahmundry who played a crucial role in India's freedom struggle. Mr. Subba Rao was also one of the founders of ‘The Hindu', an English Daily.

Today, Rajahmundry is primarily a pilgrimage centre, due to the presence of a large number of temples in the city. It also holds the Pushkaram, once every 12 years. Pushkaram is a holy congregation which sees millions of devotees taking a dip in the Godavari. The city also shares a special bond with Tollywood. Pattiseema, a scenic spot here, involves the shooting of numerous Telugu movies every year. Apart from the temples and the Tollywood tryst, the place is also known for Pulasa Fish. It's a rare species which is found only during the monsoon season.

Rajahmundry is well connected to other neighboring cities of Andhra Pradesh by road and rail. Located on an elevation of 45 feet, it has a typical hot and humid tropical climate. The temperature does not vary much throughout the year, but the months of December and January are relatively cooler than the rest.

Guthikonda caves and Stinagaram are some of the interesting places to visit in the Guntur region. They are believed to be old and there are references to them in Vedic Puranas. Hyder Ali and the Nizam of Hyderabad ruled the city before the European colonial powers arrived in Guntur. Guntur was the French capital for a brief while.

1752: The French shifted their headquarters from Kondavid Fort because of the ample availability of water due to the two large tanks. This settlement formed the nucleus of the modern city.

1788: The Nizam and Haidar Ali ruled the town untill the British took over.

1859: It was made the headquarters of a district named after it that was abolished and later got reconstituted in 1904.

1890: The city rapidly became a major market for agricultural product due to the opening of the railway link.

Vijayawada, in Andhra Pradesh, is the sacred pilgrim centre housing one of the most famous and splendorous temples dedicated to Goddess Kanaka Durga. Kanaka Durga temple in Vijayawada, is the most visited pilgrim centre situated on the mountain named Indrakeeladri on the banks of the river Krishna. The piligrims visit this place to attain meritorious worlds and an ultimate salvation, which is supposed to be the goal of human life.

Kaalika puraana, Durgaa sapthashati and other vedic literature have mentioned about Goddess Kanaka Durga on the Indrakeelaadri and have described the deity as Swayambhu, (self-manifested) in Triteeya kalpa.

The legendary story states that, Indrakeela, a shaakteya devotee performed great repentance and when Goddess appeared, he requested her presence on him. Then Goddess Kanaka Durga asked him to transform into a mountain and after killing Mahishaasura, she resided on the mountain named Indrakeeladri. On the request of the other Gods, Goddess Durga killed the demon Durgama where she turned into golden color. So the Gods praised her as Kanaka Durga (Kanaka means Gold).

During the Dwaapara Yuga, one among the Pandavaas, Arjuna did great penance on this mountain Indrakeeladri for Lord Shiva in order to get the most powerful Astra called Paashupataastra. Later, Lord Shiva appeared to fulfil the desire of Arjuna and called him as Vijaya (victorious). On account of Arjuna's victory, this place was known as Vijayawada. Arjuna realized that he could get the Paashupataastra only by the grace of Goddess Kanaka Durga so he started worshipping her and named her as Brahmaastreshwari. Arjuna is also known as Phalguna, since he performed penance here, this place derived its name Phalgunikshetra. Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Indra, Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Agastya, Bharadwaaja, Markandeya, Paandavaas, Aadishankaraacharya, Sri Krishnadevaraya and many others worshipped this deity in Vijayawada.

Apart from Kanaka Durga, Lord Shiva is also worshipped here as Malleeshwara. The legend says Lord Brahma did penance for Lord Shiva and worshipped him with jasmine (malle) flowers, owing to which Lord Shiva is known as Malleshwara. In Kaliyuga, Aadi Shankaraacharya, in order to pacify the furious form of Kanaka Durga, Shri Chakra was installed and worshipped. Many people visit this temple and the number of pilgrims increases in folds every Friday. Every year on Chaitra Shuddha Pournami, Vasanta Kalyanam is performed to Goddess Durga and Lord Malleshwara. Brahmotsavams in the temple are performed in Vasanta Ritu and the kalyaana performed during the utsavams is known as Vasanta Kalyana.

Andhra Pradesh- "The Rice Bowl of India"

Andhra Pradesh is situated on the Deccan (south) plateau which is one of the oldest geological formations in India. The mighty Godavari and Krishna rivers cut their way through the plateau, forming large deltas before entering the Bay of Bengal. Andhra Pradesh, situated south of the Vindhyas, is surrounded by Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, the Bay of Bengal in the east and Tamil Nadu and Karnataka in the south and by Maharashtra in the west. It is the fifth largest state in India in area and population. The state can be divided into three important regions-the coastal region, comprising of nine districts, generally called Andhra; the interior region, consisting of four districts collectively known as Rayalaseema; and the Telengana region, consisting of the capital Hyderabad and nine adjoining districts. Eight of its 23 districts have direct access to the sea.

History:

-Historically it is believed that the original people of Andhra Pradesh were Aryans. Post their migration to the south of Vindhyas they were mixed up with other races. A major part of Emperor Ashoka's kingdom, Andhra Pradesh was an important Buddhist center of that time. Several places in the state still bear the traces of the Buddhist culture and influence.

-The Satavahana dynasty is perhaps the earliest dynasty that ruled in Andhra Pradesh. After the end of the Satavahana reign, the state was ruled by the Pallavas, the Chalukyas, the Cholas and the Kakaityas respectively.

-In 1323, the Kakatiya dynasty was uprooted, following the capture of their ruler by Tughlak Sultan of Delhi. After the end of the Kakatiya dynasty, few local kingdoms rose to power in different parts of the kingdom. Among these, the Vijaynagar kingdom was the most powerful one. The great king Krishnadeva Raya belonged to that kingdom. After failing time and again against the Vijayanagar empire, the kingdom was finally captured by the Muslim invaders.

-In the middle of the 16th century, the emergence of the Qutb Shahi dynaty took place. They were defeated by Aurangazeb's son.

-In 1707, Hyderabad was declared independent and went under the rule of the Nizams. The Nizams were great allies of the British and they helped the Europeans to defeat Tipu Sultan of Mysore.

-Post the Indian independence, Andhra Pradesh became the first state to be formed on the basis of language. The Telegu speaking people were given 21 districts, out of which 9 were in the Nizam's Dominions and the rest in the Madras Presidency.

-Following an agitation in 1953, 11 districts of the Madras state were taken to form a new Andhra state with Kurnool as its capital.

-In 1956, nine districts under the Nizam were later added to form the enlarged state of Andhra Pradesh. Hyderabad became the capital of the state, which is one of the most technologically advanced cities of the modern India.

Dooars and Kalimpong – Two Scenic Valley of West Bengal

When you come across a jolly ride through the hill slopes, pervasive lush green tea gardens separated by anfractuous silvery mountain streams, high Sal forests, small hushed ethnic villages, humongous meadows with a blue outline of the great Himalayan ranges in the horizon, endless sky..... you are for sure in Dooars!

Dooars are the floodplains and foothills of the eastern Himalayas in North-East India around Bhutan and the valley stretches from River Teesta on the west to River Sankosh on the east. Duar means door in Assamese, Nepali, Bhojpuri, Magahi and Bengali, and is known so as the region forms the gateway to Bhutan from India.

The rivers Raidak, Torsha, Jaldhaka and Kaljani with their innumerable tributaries trotting and rolling down from the hills creates a mesmerizing effect.

History: After the devastation of the kingdom of Kamatapur by Alauddin Husain Shah of Gaur in 1494, the Koch kingdom emerged again in the Dooars under the leadership of Vishwa Singha. Hingulavas near Mahakalguri in the Dooars was the earliest capital of the Koch kingdom.

Due to the weakness of the Koch kingdom in subsequent times, Bhutan took possession of the Dooars. This region was controlled by the kingdom of Bhutan when the British annexed it in 1865 after the Bhutan War under the command of Captain Hedayat Ali.

The area was divided into two parts: the eastern part was merged with Goalpara district in Assam and the western part was turned into a new district named Western Dooars.

In 1869, the name was changed to Jalpaiguri District.

After the end of the British rule in India in 1947, the Dooars acceded into the dominion of India and it merged with the Union of India shortly afterwards in 1949.
