Dog Days of Summer
When the weather gets nice, there's no reason to leave Man's Best Friend out of the fun. Many of Somerville's summer festivals are so pet centralized, it would be more fitting to classify them as person-friendly rather than pet-friendly. The second annual Somerville Dog Festival, also known as "Dog Fest", is being held Saturday, September 13 at Conway Park. All proceeds will benefit the Animal Rescue League of Boston. The day will consist of demonstrations including agility, flyball, Frisbee, nosework, search and rescue; a best trick contest; a silent auction; and an AKC Canine Good Citizen clinic and certification. A fashion show will showcase the latest in canine couture. It's sure to be an exciting day for human and hound alike.
Farm Fresh
Summer is the perfect season to find fresh produce. Support local farmers and vendors at the Somerville Union Square Farmers Market on Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm. Local bands including Tokyo Tramps and Grown Up Noise provide an ambiance perfect for perusing artisanal honeys and breads, impeccably fresh and local produce, meat, fish and wine. While each market's offerings vary, the "Harvest Calendar" forecasts what is likely to be available. The market takes place rain or shine.
Somerville Arts Council Events
Over the years, The Somerville Arts Council has built a diverse and inspiring range of programs and events. From the ever growing two-day annual music, art, and crafts event, Art Beat; to the on-going switchbox project, the Council continuously provides and expands upon art throughout Somerville. Inspired by the "night markets" of the Far East, The Hungry Tiger Street Festival brings a completely new experience to Somerville's Union Square. For one night Union Square transforms into a bustling night market featuring food and entertainment from the numerous continents and countries represented by the businesses of Union Square. Street foods familiar to those in Brazil or Thailand will be served, with live cooking and food demonstrations. Local artists will be selling wares and original one-of-a-kind costumes. What's more, there will be street performers captivating the crowd and blending into this magical, one-night-only environment that you, the visitor, are helping create.
