Maldives Fishing Challenge

The Maldives Game Fishing Challenge has been launched for the first time this year by the MGFA and momentum is building rapidly among the passionate fishing community in the Maldives. As one of the main professions in the Maldives and a very popular leisure activity I couldn't think of anywhere more perfect to host a big game fishing challenge.

For any keen fishermen who are planning a Maldives holiday, this sounds like the perfect pastime, although the other half may not quite share your enthusiasm!

The competition takes place between the 10th and 12th of November in the pristine waters around the North & South Male and Vaavu Atolls, perfect for open water fishing like this and up to 80 anglers from the Maldives and other worldwide destinations will compete.

I imagine that the competition will be quite fierce; with the anglers commenting on whose catch is the biggest, healthiest and likely to taste the best! The most sought after catch will include Marlin, Sailfish and Wahoo as well as the more unfortunate named yet delicious Yellow Fin and Dog Tooth Tuna.

Despite fishermen's love of catching the best fish in the Maldivian waters and taking it home for the family to feast on, the Maldives Game Fishing Challenge is following the rules of ‘Tag & Release' so the fish will be released back into the sea after being caught and judged.

As well as the actual fishing events, over the three day period there will also be many other events and celebrations on land for anglers, families and spectators. The grand finale of the competition will be an awards ceremony and dinner, held at a local luxury island resort.

So for any avid anglers out there who haven't had a family holiday yet this year why not book a trip to the Maldives this winter and partake in a spot of competitive fishing while you're there. With an average temperature in excess of 28 degrees and a whole host of luxury resorts with fantastic accommodation and world class food to choose from you can't go far wrong. What's more, the kids will enjoy the great facilities at many of the Maldives luxury resorts and hotels which often include children's clubs, organised activities and dedicated children's menus.

The Misunderstood Maldives!

I've always liked the idea of a Maldives holiday, and if I manage to save enough pennies the chance is there for me to one day visit. I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed.

Chatting away to friends and colleagues of mine, it seems that my enthusiasm isn't always shared. People do seem to undoubtedly view the destination favourably, but not everyone fancies the idea of going themselves. It divides opinion.

Single people for example tell me that in such a romantic island location, that the thought of them going there and not sharing it with anyone is one they couldn't stand.  I understand that perspective. Other singles however pointed out that they'd be happy to go with a friend and soak up the sun, beaches and water sports on offer. But there's no lying that they tend to be women. 

Some other friends of mine didn't like the idea of ‘doing nothing for two weeks' and it was at this point that I realised that the destination is perhaps a little bit misunderstood.  You can go there and do nothing of course, but you can also go there and do plenty!

I just don't think people realise quite how good the Maldives hotels are, or even perhaps the scope of discovery that the Indian Ocean represents. They don't seem to realise that these hotels have been purpose built to cater for the fact that their location is remote. Sure, some hotels have more extensive facilities than others, but almost every hotel has a spa, almost every hotel has a gym, every hotel has a pool and relaxation area (often private pools) and I think I'm right in saying that each and every hotel offers more than one kind of water sports and at least one land based sporting opportunity be it beach volleyball, football, tennis or cycling.

With the Indian Ocean surrounding every hotel you will always have the opportunity to snorkel and to dive, and if that sounds too dramatic or off putting for you then scuba diving is even more gentle way to discover the mysteries of the ocean and the array of fish you will see will absolutely delight you. You might not think it's for you, but if you do think that way I'd urge you to give it a try – as you really are missing out. 

I suppose with an island destination you are always going to be limited as to what you can feasibly ‘do' to a certain extent. Being surrounded on a small island completely by the Indian Ocean does lend some astounding views, but it kind of hinders you as well. For example, if you want very diverse shopping and land based excursions you might well up disappointed.  And for those who want to hire a car and buzz about visiting various places, you won't find too many opportunities in the Maldives for that.

People visit these amazing islands to be closer to nature, and to soak up the ‘island experience' coupled with luxuries that you wouldn't normally associate with island living. That is in essence what drives people to these fantastic shores.

Another thing about the Maldives which is prevalent is the provision of personal space which adds to the feeling of ‘castaway island experience' that acts as such a strong draw for people. You'll find authentic over water villas but in almost every resort these aren't thoughtlessly built all together in one cluster, they are carefully dotted often in an arc shape to maximise the allocation of space.
Most accommodations feature outdoor space too, in the form of a furnished balcony or terrace – in many instances overlooking the ocean and a plunge pool, so you've got a completely self enclosed luxury holiday experience purely via the room type you've booked!
