Abanindranath Tagore

Abanindranath Tagore is a natural talent born in an artistic family, so the creativity flows within his veins. He was mainly known for his work as a painter, however this is not the only field he created his masterpieces. Tagore expressed himself in writing as well. He published several kids books, some of them were illustrated by himself.

Tagore had the sole aim to create a painting style emblematic for India, which would replace the so famous Western one. He succeeded in this hard endeavor by combining both Moghul and Rajput styles and modernizing them to a whole new level. This particular style was adopted by numerous later painters like Jamini Roy, Asit Kumar Halder and others.

Tagore first realized his deep affection towards painting while studying in Sanskrit College. He took advantage of some art lessons by his classmate Anukul Chatterjee. Later he also entered the St. Xavier's College in order to learn English, but his persistency failed him and in a year an a half he left.

Tagore rediscovered his passion towards painting at the age of 25 when he decided to take private lessons from a professional painter - the Vice Principal of the Calcutta Government School of Art. Further he joined the studio of another operating painter to develop his oil painting skills. Tagore was much curious for knowledge, which led him to learning Japanese and studying their particular styles of painting.

In order to popularize the new style he had created, Tagore established "The Bengal School" and "Indian School of Oriental Art". When he was 42 he organized his first exhibitions in London and Paris. Japan was also a country he frequently demonstrated his works.

As a whole he is said to have made around 500 paintings in his lifetime.  As far as his literary heritage, among the most influential works are the books "Kshirer Putul", "Buro Angla", "Raj Kahini", "Sakuntala".

Khushwant Singh Indo-Anglican Writer

Khushwant Singh is a great author and journalist. His writing style is quite exceptional, rich in biting humor, one could call it sarcasm even, decisive secularism, and much revered honesty. In the year 2000 he was granted highly praised "Honest Man of the Year Award" by the Sulabh International Social Service Organization for his brave commentary reflecting the pure reality.

One of the novels he became famous with is called "Train to Pakistan" in which rather shocking events are described. On the day prior to the partition of India and Pakistan Singh was driving to back to the town where his family resided when he came across a car with Sikhs. They were over excited and emotionally described him how they had just murdered a whole village harbouring Muslims. This story rather sharply affected the writer and he included pieces of it in his above mentioned novel. A couple of other books of his that are very well known are "Delhi" and "The company of women".

Singh's career as a journalist began in 1951 at All India Radio. Nowadays he has become such a revered commentaries writer that a weekly column of his, "With Malice Towards One and All", is publish not in a single newspaper but in several ones. Before this huge success he used to work as an editor of "Yojana", "Illustrated Weekly of India", "New Delhi", "Hindustan times". 

Singh is also known for having made a number of translations and a two volume history of Sikhs. In regard to the political side of his life we could reveal that for six years he has been a member of the upper house of the Indian Parlament - Rajya Sabha. The President himself presented him with the award Padma Bhushan in 1974, however ten years later Singh gave it back as an expression of protest against the Golden Temple siege.
