Rameshwaram is a pilgrimage town situated in the Ramanathapuram District of Tamil Nadu. This pilgrimage town is counted amongst the holiest places of India and is referred to as one of the ‘Chaar Dhaams' in the Hindu mythology. It is mainly a pilgrimage dedicated to Lord Rama and Lord Shiva and the most significant feature in the place is its sacred and ancient Jyotirlingam. This Jyotirlingam is regarded as one of the 12 most sacred Lingams of Lord Shiva present in the world. Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple is a famous Hindu temple of Rameshwaram and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to a Shiva mythology, this temple is the same place where Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva to forgive him for any sins that he might have committed during his war with the demon king Ravana. This temple is also an epitome of the Dravidian style of Architecture from the medieval ages. The main feature of this temple however remains the sacred Jyotirlingam, due to which this place is regarded as the holiest adobes of Lord Shiva.

Originally this temple is said to have been built in the 12th century by Lord Rama himself. Its construction was initiated by the Parakrama Bahu of Sri Lanka and was completed by the Setupathy rulers of Ramanathapuram. After that, over the centuries many modifications have been done to it by rulers of different times, out of which the latest was the 3rd Prakaram in the 18th century. Agnitheertham, Dhanushkodi, Kothandaraswamy Temple, Gandamadana Parvatham, and Erwadi are few of the other important sightseeing attractions of Rameshwaram.

Apart from the sacred significance of the Rameshwaram town, it is also popular amongst the tourists for its serene beauty and calm environment. The whole region of Rameshwaram is an island, also referred by the name of Pamban Island. It lies at the tip of the Indian peninsula, in the Gulf of Mannar. It is separated by the mainland of India by the Pamban Channel and the only way to reach it is through the Pamban or Annai Indira Gandhi Bridge. This bridge also lies at a short distance of 40 km from the Mannar Island of Sri Lanka. There are also many important beaches situated here that attract many people to make vacation plans to Rameshwaram island.
