Making Magic in Mexico

Say the word "Mexico" and almost automatically most people will envisage the set of an old John Wayne film with a Mexico being the ideal hiding ground for the bad guys. The ironic twist is that John Wayne himself used to love escaping the rigours of stardom in Mexico and often used to stay at the Los Flamingos hotel in what is now the older section of Acapulco. Though Acapulco has in recent years fallen in favour when compared to newer destinations such as Cancun, luxury Mexico holidays can still successfully include Acapulco in their itinerary. As a matter of fact, a lot of cruise ships sailing in the Caribbean dock in Acapulco.

Acapulco does have a lot to offer the visitor during their luxury Mexico holidays. Carrying on with the movie theme, one of the most unusual churches in Mexico, the Nuestra Senora de la Soledad was built in Acapulco as a movie set. Unless you know this fact, the church with its onion domes and Byzantine towers looks very strange and out of place whilst on your luxury Mexico holidays.

Culturally, the art of Mexico is very different to the design of the Nuestra Senora de la Soledad – see Diego Rivera's art on the outside of the Dolores Olmedo House. The house is covered in the most amazing murals completed by Rivera in the last two years of his life. The inside was also decorated by him but, as it is a private residence, the public is not allowed in.

Your luxury Mexico holidays can offer you the opportunity to investigate a number of different Mesa-American cultures. Several large cities were abandoned – seemingly without reason – and were swallowed by the jungle. Some have been rediscovered and are being painstakingly restored whilst others are waiting to be found. Perhaps the legendary El Dorado, or City of Gold, is not in the Amazon but in Mexico somewhere. The best preserved amongst those found is Teotihuacan – built and abandoned by an unknown race, the builders and inhabitants of this city remain a mystery to this day. All that we know for sure is that this civilization predated that of the Aztecs and influenced the Aztec civilization a great deal.

No Mexico luxury holidays would be complete without a trip to the Mayan Riviera to relax and recuperate in much the same way as the Mayans did. The media images of Mexico tend to focus on the arid regions but these are not representative of the country as a whole. Parts of Mexico are lush and verdant sub-tropical jungles. Explore Mexico now and see for yourself.
