It's the Maldives Hay Festival

Next month, the Maldives will become alight with cultural festivities and celebrations as the Hay Literary Festival holds the second Maldives event in as many years. The festival will celebrate the electric Maldivian culture through a series of musical, literary and artistic performances throughout the month of October.

A traditionally British affair, the Hay Festivals are renowned for encompassing the best authors and thinkers and getting people from all walks of life to celebrate this.  In the Maldives this has been taken even further as the festival brings together local and international artists, performers and writers who specialise in literature, art, music, drama, science and poetry over the 2,000 year history of the Maldives Islands.

The Maldivians laid back approach is heavily reflected in the celebrations. Think colourful parades, heart-warming concerts, unique art displays and casual literary readings and you have the idea. Festivals and celebrations like this emphasise how important fields like music and art in the Maldivian culture. They bring communities together and the Hay Festival in 2010 was a huge success in the Maldives.

As Brits, our concept of Maldives holidays tend to be classed as somewhat luxurious with the focus often being relaxing by a pool while soaking up the glorious sunshine and sipping cocktails, but anyone on holiday there in October will be more than welcome to join the locals in their celebrations as part of the Hay Festival.

Activities celebrating the academic and artistic fields are held throughout the Maldives for the duration of October so if you have booked, or are considering booking, a Maldives holiday this is a great time to visit and allow yourself to experience the islands natural beauty, the luxury of the many five star resorts and the overwhelming traditional culture.

Of course, part of the lure of the Maldives is that the very geological make up of the islands, the isolation - offers somewhere very unique for relaxation and to 'get away' from it all. This is why many of the hotels in the Maldives have a spa, to allow your mind and body to go through a period of recovery and rejuvenation via tailored treatments and techniques.

That said, the Maldives does offer fabulous water sports, diving, snorkelling, beach sports and culture, so it would be a shame not to experience at least one of these aspects whilst you are on holiday.
