The city of Winslow is in Navajo County, Arizona. The city was made famous by the Eagles rock band when they released their song "take it easy" which includes the line "I was standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona." Covering about twelve square miles, Winslow sits at an elevation of 4,850 square miles. The semi-arid dry southwest climate brings cool winters and hot summers, with only about eight inches of rain every year.
The Winslow Unified School District runs the public schools, and the largest educational institution in Winslow is the Little Colorado Campus of Northland Pioneer College. A major attraction in Winslow is the Standin' on the Corner Park which pays tribute to the famous song by the Eagles, plus there is a Standin' on the Corner festival every September. The 9-11 Remembrance Gardens, which displays two beams from the World Trade Center towers, is at the corner of TransCon Lane and Old Route 66.
The Barringer Meteor Crater, designated a National Natural Landmark, is about sixty miles away near Diablo Canyon. the Painted Desert is about sixty miles east of Winslow, stretching from the Grand Canyon National Park to the Petrified Forest National Park roughly following the Little Colorado river. The Little Painted Desert is closer to Winslow, about fifteen miles away.
Winslow was originally on the famous Route 66 highway, but was bypassed by the construction of Interstate I-40 during the 1970s, which runs just north of town. Greyhound Bus Lines operates daily service from Winslow to Flagstaff, continuing to Phoenix. The Winslow-Lindbergh Regional Airport was designed by famous aviator Charles Lindbergh, who was living in town during it's construction. Today Winslow-Lindbergh is a general aviation airport, as there is no airline service in Winslow. Certainly well worth a visit.
Winslow has long been a major railroad center, with the Burlington-Northern Santa Fe Railroad running their TransCon Chicago-Los Angeles line going through the town. Winslow is also a BNSF Railroad crew change station. The Amtrak Southwest Chief which runs between Chicago and Los Angeles, stops at the historic La Posada railroad hotel at 501 East Second Street in Winslow, which was built in 1929.
