Indoor/Outdoor Attractions of Fort William

Welcome to the wonderful world of the Scottish highlands. Fort William is a magnificent township in the heart of the highland's region, standing as a wonderful tourist destination. It sits on the shores of Loch Linnhe, and attracts many thousands of tourists every year, from both domestic cities and international destinations.

It is most accessible via the highway leading from Glasgow, offering expedient infrastructure for buses, vans and cars. However, it is also possible to reach the town through the Scottish railway network. There are so many hotels in Fort William, but tourists are advised to reserve a room before making their way to the city.

Fort William is home to a number of worthy attractions. Therefore, visitors should really spend at least a couple of days in the city before moving onto their next Scottish or United Kingdom destination. Both indoor and outdoor attractions can be found in the city.

Outdoor

  •     Ben Nevis is the most important attraction in the Fort William area. It is also the highest peak in the United Kingdom, scraping the sky some 4,400 feet above the town of Fort William. The city is used as the main base for tourists wanting to explore this stunning mountain landmark. There are many tourists that climb the mountain each year, but even though it is not overly high compared to other mountains throughout the European continent, Ben Nevis still has some pretty dangerous paths leading to the top. Mountain biking, hiking and trekking are also popular activities closer to the base of the mountain.
  •     Ben Nevis may be the biggest, but some tourists prefer the smaller mountain ranges around the mountain for their hiking and even mountain biking experience. One of these places is known as the Mamores, and boasts a tremendous mountain experience for all tourists that visit.
  •     The mountains are one thing, but the lakes are certainly another. One of the best lakes and closest lakes to the city of Fort William is the Loch Linnhe, which is great for boating, fishing and just strolling along its shoreline. It is definitely a tourist favourite site, and very popular among the locals.
  •     Back to the mountain area, skiing and snowboarding are excellent attractions around the Fort William township in the winter. There are several chairlifts and gondolas that provide access to the Nevis Ranges ski slopes.

Indoor

  •     Even though the town of Fort William is said to be the capital of the United Kingdom's outdoor tourism, there are still plenty of things to do indoors too. One of these is definitely the town centre, which is located on High Street. There are plenty of pubs, restaurants and other establishments available, but it's the highland culture that stands out in the city centre.
  •     Moving away from the cultural rich city centre, and visitors will be able to find the Ben Nevis Distillery, which is one of the oldest distilleries in the entire Scottish nation. It is about 174 years old, and doesn't even look like closing. The whiskey industry in Scotland is still thriving, and visitors will certainly find the distillery an interesting facility. There are excellent tours of the place, entertaining visitors for hours.
  •     Another of the popular indoor attractions in Fort William is the Western Highlands Museum. This museum is located in the heart of the Fort William township, and is certainly an attraction of growing importance for the area. There are so many exhibits located inside the museum, providing an excellent array of items that will teach all about the history of this fascinating area. The museum also boasts information and items from the old fort that the town was built around.
