Though there is plenty to do in the beautiful and lovely German town of Heidelberg, guests to the European city may opt for a day out of town and views of some richer regional climate. Many options are available for those looking for a brief escape from views of the Heidelberg Castle or the same old walk through the Heidelberg Aldtstadt. A number of hotels in Heidelberg offer tour packages for those looking to do more on their holiday. Day trips out of town as well as elaborate helicopter tours can be booked on a daily basis for a range of fees depending on the package.
Just outside of Heidelberg are a number of smaller, but equally interesting towns that see fewer tourists than the major Heidelberg location. One such place is the town of Schwetzingen. This town is about 12KM from Heidelberg and can be reached in a number of ways. One of the most obvious ways is by rental car. If you would prefer to tour a bit of southwest Germany on your own without the hustle of a timed schedule, then this could be your best option.
Germany has a number of rental car options for you to choose from. You may opt to pick up your car straight from the airport or wait until you have reached your hotel in Heidelberg. Europcar and Auto Europe are probably two of the most famous car rental companies in Germany and throughout Europe for that matter. There is also the ever-popular Avis Rental Car as well as Germany exclusive German Rent a Car. Rates do not vary all that much from company to company though it certainly does not hurt to shop around. You might find various promotional packages taking places from region to region or at various times of the year for that matter.
The busiest and most popular time for people to travel around Europe is in the summer between the months of June through August when the students are out on holiday. You would be wise to remember that car rental companies are in high demand during these months and as such you will need to book the appropriate car far in advance. Prices may also be higher as the number of cars on the road may cause the number of accidents to increase and consequently car insurance prices to peak.
The worst time to rent a car in Europe is in the winter when roads are covered in ice and snow. European cars are much smaller than in some other countries around the world and are not quite built for hauling large loads in bad weather. That said, winter is a beautiful time to visit Europe as well as the town of Heidelberg. It is particularly lovely during late November through late December when the local Christmas Market attracts guests from all over the continent. Be sure to visit the markets and enjoy some of Germany's specialty Christmas eats and drinks.
The German Christmas Markets serve some of the best treats including sweet rolled chocolate logs and fresh out of the oven ginger snaps decorated for the occasion and sure to make great gifts as well as please the little ones. You will also find some delicious mulled wines located here and local ingredients for the best holiday meal of your life. If you happen to be visiting Heidelberg during one of the rainier or snowier months, then you might want to consider hiring a car with driver for a day through a tour package. The tour package will take you to local towns just outside of Heidelberg.
