Hammamet Activities

Welcome to the first-floor city of Hammamet. It gets its nickname because of the town law which prohibits the construction of any building over a certain height. This has created a more traditional atmosphere in the city, which happens to also be one of Tunisia's main tourist destinations.

The city is located on the eastern coast of the country, and sits between the airports of Tunis and Monastir. Most visitors fly into the city through Tunis, but the international airport of Monastir is also a popular port of entry for holiday makers heading to Hammamet.

The Hammamet hotels found in the city are generally of high quality, although some should be avoided. Nevertheless, holidaying in the city will be a memorable experience for any traveller. There are plenty of awesome activities that will delight and even entice travellers to return once more to this beautiful beachside resort town. Many of these activities can be seen below.

- Hammamet Medina
One of the most attractive activities in Hammamet is visiting the local medina. When travellers come to Tunisia, it is almost an expectation for guests to take a few hours out of their holiday and experience this stunning and quite fascinating area. However, tourists are warned to be ready for a barrage of attention from the shopkeepers. For those with excellent bargaining techniques, you will certainly be put to the test in Hammamet's medina area. Tourists will be surrounded by other tourists and locals, so if first-timers are a little unsure of the skills involved, take a few minutes to just sit and watch. There are so many different things to purchase in the medina.

- Hammamet's Beaches
Even though the medina is a popular place to visit, there are several beaches that usually seal the deal when it comes to luring visitors to the city. Of the 50,000 tourists to enter Hammamet during the year, most visit during the summer time for its beaches. There are so many different activities found along the beaches, including jet skiing, wind surfing, canoeing, fishing and sunbathing. Swimmers will enjoy playing in the water, as there are usually a lot of fish jumping around the shoreline too.

- Modern Centre
Yasmine is the newest area of town, and boasts quite a number of different restaurants and shops. It is by far the most developed part of the city, and tourists will be forgiven for thinking they have left Hammamet for Monaco or some other more modern port city. The marina is also found in the Yasmine area, making it convenient for people to jump on a fishing boat or touring boat, then enjoy a lunch or dinner at one of the restaurants upon their return.

- Nabeul Market
Hammamet is home to a number of wonderful shopping options. However, for a more tourist friendly shopping opportunity, the town of Nabeul is one of the best places to visit. It is only about 10 minutes away from Hammamet, and offers a great range of ceramics and other local handicraft products. However, tourists should be aware that prices in Nabeul are generally more expensive than in Hammamet due to their reliance on tourism. Despite this, tourists really are guaranteed a wonderful experience.

-  Getting Out
Yes, Hammamet is a great place to visit, boasting many important sites and attractions. However, some of the most important places in history are located just a short distance from Hammamet. Carthage is only a few hours drive from Hammamet, and it is recommended that travellers hire a car or travel by a tour van, as the many ancient sites of Carthage are very spread out.
