Fuengirola for a Holiday with History and Relaxation on the Costa del Sol

It's that time of year once again to book your COSTA DEL SOL HOLIDAYS. When everyone else is racing to the beach for sun, sea and sand, why not choose a place that has the best of both worlds? The tiny fishing village of Fuengirola is just that place. Fuengirola's economy was based on fishing until recently; it has now become a tourist hot spot. It still depends on fishing to a certain extent as well as being a trade and commerce centre, but it is now attracting good numbers of tourists. As a result, Fuengirola has become a major player on the tourist market for Spain. This constitutes a major change for such a tiny village.

Like most towns in Spain, Fuengirola has its own castle called Sohail. This castle, built on a hill near the large beach, is believed to have Moorish origins. The Spanish government has now declared this castle a Heritage Property, giving it all the rights it deserves. After the Moors left, its inhabitation is unclear until the French Army use it as a military observatory unit for some time. After they left the castle fell into disrepair. Due to the concerted efforts of the townsfolk though, the castle has been once again returned to its former glory. This is a great place to spend the day if for nothing more than to imagine what it was like to live in a castle those many years ago.

Fuengirola has a picturesque setting with the mountains as a backdrop and a beautiful beach in front of it where the crystal waters of the Mediterranean Sea gently kiss the shore. This beach has been awarded the European Blue Flag for cleanness, safety and availability of all necessary facilities. There is also a wide variety of water sports on offer on the beach which include surfing, fishing and boating. They also have a restricted area for the children to enjoy their water sports in more safety.

Like most cities in Spain, Fuengirola has its own museum. It is home to a number of works from the Moorish period of occupation along with some from the Visigoths occupation. This is a good place to start tracing the city's history and learn about the different civilizations that once lived here. This is a well maintained museum with everything kept up to date, making your search easier.

The parish church is deemed a hot spot as most tourists pay a visit to this beautiful building. The time of its construction is not known other than it is really old. It still functions as a parish church to this day; besides holding services every week, it conducts marriages and baptisms. The locals are very proud of this church and rightly so. They consider it of such great value that they display rare works of art there.

If you would like to do a little or a lot of shopping while on your COSTA DEL SOL HOLIDAYS, there are a number of places in Fuengirola that will be glad to relieve you of your money. There are a few chic boutiques with brand name clothing and hair products are produced in the village. It is said that Fuengirola is a shoppers dream come true. If you would like to spend some big bucks, there are fine works of art and some artefacts along with a few sculptures that should satisfy your need to spend money.
