If you are looking for somewhere great to travel this summer then how about considering Budapest? Straddling the river, the two ancient towns of Buda and Pest joined to become the capital of Hungary, and don't fail to disappoint. It's a cacophony of the influence of different eras and there are some amazing sights for tourists including St Stephens Basilica and the River Danube. There is an area known as Castle Hill where you can see a variety of churches, buildings and street areas that really throw you back in history. You can see the official residence of the president of Hungary, and visit the royal palace that has been the sight of much fighting over the centuries. You can visit museums that show the culture of the city and how it has built up, and you can also visit the religious grounds of some other religions, including some gorgeous synagogues; the city is home to the second largest working synagogue in the world. You can visit for the opera, for folk music, or go for a walk down the river to see the scenery at night.
Another great draw to the city is the spas. The Romans settled here due to it being a thermal spa location, and you can see the ruins of these baths, not to mention visit the modern ones for a great and relaxing trip.
But if you are looking for an up and coming destination then Budapest will give you that two. Nestled in the old quarters you will find little cars crammed with youngsters that are nicknamed ‘ruin pubs'; tiny little places that offer live music and ample alcohol. The rent on these buildings are relatively low so have become occupied by some lovely little boutique bars that are eclectic and interesting. There are no smoking rules in these places so they are a heady mix of smoke filled rooms and rich drinks, and you can go for a cocktail or a beer; alcohol is in its plenty.
