Pushkar: The City Of Temples, Beautiful Lakes And Holy Hearts

Pushkar is a well known holy place for the Hindus, located 11 kilometers away from the North-West of Ajmer. The lakeside settlement is so captivating and charming that Kalidas included this place in his classic, the Abhigyan Sakuntalam. The Mahabharata and Ramayana also have references to this place which is considered to be Adi Tiratha. The existence of a lake during the 4th Century B.C. even in the unfavourable surroundings of a desert place is just equivalent to a miracle. SAVITRI TEMPLE:  In order to experience the magical view of the Savitri Temple and the beautiful surroundings here, you have to take a one-hour trek to the hill top. Also the glacial beauty, the lake which comes in the way of the trek is worth watching and praising.

VARAH TEMPLE: It was initially built in the twelfth century. Later, it was destroyed by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, according to whom the worship of the idol of Varah was insane. The Varah is the god with a man's body and a boar's head. Then, the temple was re- built by Raja Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur in the year 1727. The temple is decorated charmingly and richly adorned by precious gold ornaments.

MAHADEVA TEMPLE: This is also an important holy structure built in the nineteenth century. It is one of the most praised temples by the foreign tourists. One of them remarked it to be the dignity of Pushkar tourism as it is fully adorned by the gold ornaments of ancient designing and integrated carving. It is also known for its white marble Mahadeva's image which has five faces and the traditional style of hair.

RAMAVAIKUNTH TEMPLE: This temple is the largest and the most beautifully carved temple in the entire Pushkar. Its foundation was laid in 1920's. It has about 361 amazingly carved idols of different deities. On the entrance, the ornate outer gopuram is believed to be built by a dozen of masons who were called here from south of India.

LAKE AND ITS MANY GHATS: There are many ghats which run down to the enchanting holy place where the pilgrims bathe in for various immortal purposes associated with their religion. There is a compulsion of removing the shoes in a proper assigned place before heading towards the ghats. Smoking and taking photographs of the bathing people is strictly prohibited. All these measures are taken in order to give respect to the culture and the privacy of the people. It is said that the holy water of the Pushkar Lake wash away all the sins of the bathing people for their lifetime. This water also cures various skin diseases.
